A town is set to host a "Ukrainian Sunday" featuring talks, a live link to the country and the screening of the award-winning documentary 20 Days in Mariupol.

It has been organised by DOCS+, which has been screening documentaries in Oundle, Northamptonshire, for 15 years.

20 Days in Mariupol chronicles the Russian invasion of the Ukrainian port city last year.

Agris Krumins, founder and chair of DOCS+, said: "We felt it was important to remind our audience and the wider public of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine."

Having annexed Crimea in 2014, Russia invaded eastern Ukraine in February 2022 and the war has been ongoing ever since.

The event at the Queen Victoria Hall in Oundle will begin with a screening of the documentary.

It won an Audience Award at Sundance as well as the Cinema for Peace prize, and is directed by Mstyslav Chernov - a German-based, Pulitzer-prize winning Ukrainian journalist.

Mr Krumins said the war "continues to have a profound impact on the security of the western alliance and future prospects for world peace".

He said 20 Days in Mariupol "forms an important part of the documentary record" of the conflict and any alleged war crimes.

There will be a talk by Oundle-based Russia expert Keir Giles, a senior consulting fellow at Chatham House, who will also lead a panel discussion with Ukrainian refugee and journalism graduate, Yuliia Cherniavska.

It is hoped there will be a direct video link to Ukraine and an interview with Dr Jade McGlynn, a London-based historian, who is researching the war.

The event will finish with a performance by Ukrainian singer-songwriter Sofi Katrin, accompanied by guitarist Tomasz Zajac, and Ukrainian food will also be on offer.
