The States of Alderney is to debate the introduction of the island's first-ever minimum wage legislation.

Guernsey's Committee for Employment and Social Security found it was in the "collective interest" of both islands for a minimum wage to be introduced in Alderney.

The States of Alderney said it recognised a minimum wage was the "next step" in the introduction of employment protection legislation.

The Alderney Chamber of Commerce said it supported the move.

However, it said the policy should be introduced in a "considered and careful" way, adding there was "quite a disparity" between the average wage in Alderney compared with Guernsey's higher average wage.

It said: "Due process should be followed and the States should consult fully with their partners in Guernsey."

Guernsey's minimum wage rose to £10.65 from £9.55 an hour in October.

The States of Alderney said further work was being carried out.

It will debate the proposition on 13 December.
