A driver had a "lucky escape" when a fallen tree branch struck by a lorry went through their windscreen, police said.

Sussex Roads Police said in a post, external on X, formerly Twitter, that on Tuesday afternoon a high-sided HGV struck a branch, detaching it.

They said it then struck the car on the A283 between Dacre Gardens and Shoreham.

An image showed the branch going through the windscreen and back out on the car's passenger side.

The force confirmed there was no front seat passenger and the driver was not injured.

Police are appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage.
