Footage collected by police has shown the power of a torrential flood which killed a couple on a road in Liverpool.

Elaine and Philip Marco drowned in Mossley Hill in 2023 after a deluge of heavy rain caused a sewer to fail on a section of road which dips beneath a railway bridge.

Mr Marco, 77, is believed to have driven into the water due to poor visibility caused by the heavy rain and been unable to escape.

An inquest at Gerard Majella courthouse in Liverpool heard he had been seen by witnesses trying to carry his 76-year-old wife away the before disappearing under the water.

The couple, who were days away from their 54th wedding anniversary, had left the home of their son, Joshua Marco, after celebrating his 40th birthday on 26 August 2023.

They hit the water in Queens Drive shortly before 22:00 BST that night, only minutes from their home.

Senior firefighter Neil Mooney told an inquest the water was like the "River Mersey on a stormy night" and said undercurrents had been strong enough to knock his colleagues off their feet.

Taxi driver Mahamoud Ahmedsaid reported seeing a man "appearing to carry someone" before disappearing beneath the water.

Station manager Mr Mooney, of Merseyside Fire & Rescue Surface, told the inquest the water was estimated to have reached between 12-15 feet (3.6-4.5m), before beginning to recede about 22:30.

Officers found the body of Mrs Marco in the water first, before finding her husband around 40 minutes later.

The inquest continues.
