Shops on high streets across Rotherham can benefit from a makeover thanks to a £270,000 cash boost, the local authority has announced.

The grant aims to help businesses in Rotherham town centre, as well as in Dinnington, Maltby, Swinton and Wath-Upon-Dearne.

Eligible businesses can apply for up to £25,000, which can go towards new shop fronts, signage, flooring, lighting and other refurbishments.

John Williams, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's cabinet member for transport, jobs and the local economy, said: "We're committed to forging ahead and breathing new life into our high streets across the borough."

The initiative is part of the council's Shop Unit Business Grant Project, funded by the government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with support from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.

Businesses are being encouraged to act quickly, with grants awarded on a first come, first served basis.

Applications are open until 30 October, with all projects set to be completed by the end of December.

'Vibrant'

Williams added: "This funding represents an opportunity to support the local businesses at the heart of our communities.

"By investing in the look and feel of shops located in our town centres, we're helping to create more vibrant, welcoming spaces for residents, shoppers and visitors alike."

The investment will be complemented by the introduction of a new Street Safe Team, focused on increasing safety in town and village centres, as well as a new team dedicated to roadside cleaning, the council said.

Meanwhile, nearly £40m of government funding will be used to regenerate Dinnington town centre shops and the outdoor market, and build a new library and community centre in Wath.
