Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre will be extended to create a new rehearsal space

The final phase of a major refurbishment at the south coast’s largest theatre has been given the green light by council planners.

Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre will be extended to create a new rehearsal space, two more accessible dressing rooms, a new back-of-house stage, and a new admin block entrance.

Work at the Commercial Road venue could start next year, with a target completion of summer 2026.

The new space will help to continue and enhance programmes for young people to experience creative arts performance, theatre bosses said.

A planning officer said the proposed extension would improve the theatre’s offer to visiting shows

Chief executive and creative director Michael Ockwell said: "We recognise that our on-site provision for youth theatre falls short of our vision for creative spaces to develop and inspire young people.

"In addition, touring companies require dedicated rehearsal space as Southampton remains the first stop for West End touring productions.

"This development is not only a fantastic new space but it will improve our facilities and further strengthen Mayflower’s reputation as a leading theatre.”

Southampton City Council planning officers granted planning permission and gave listed building consent for the scheme under delegated powers.

A planning officer’s report said the proposed extension would improve the theatre’s offer to visiting shows and the community, and enhance the venue as a cultural asset.

Four objections were submitted during a public consultation, citing concerns about resident parking, late night disturbances, and loss of light.

But the council officer said: "The proposal will have no adverse impacts on the residential amenities of neighbouring occupiers and this planning decision must be based on reasonable behaviour in relation to the pedestrian access route and impact on adjacent parked vehicles."

The extension will be to the south of the existing admin block off Empire Lane.

The theatre carried out a £7.5million investment six years ago to refurbish the main auditorium, as well as deliver a new green room, archive, and back of house-to-front of house connection corridor.
