The Environment Agency has started an investigation after a report of blue discolouration of a stream flowing into the Taw estuary.

Two officers attended and found the issue was being caused by wash water containing ink used at commercial premises in Barnstaple, the agency said.

It said no fish appeared to have died in the incident but samples had been taken for analysis.

A spokesperson for the agency said: "The ink wash water impacted approximately 2.5km of the stream and has since entered the estuary.

They added: "We have given advice to the company on action needed to stop the leak."

It added: "We take all reports of pollution seriously. If anyone sees possible pollution, they can report it to us 24/7 by ringing 0800 807060."
