Gun found at house during stand-off had been fired

A discharged gun was found at a house where a man was fatally injured following a stand-off, the police watchdog said.

The man, who has not been named, died in hospital after he was found inside the property on Half Mile Green in Stanningley, Leeds, on Sunday.

Firearms officers forced entry about 10 hours after they were first called at 12:35 BST following reports a person was inside the address with a handgun.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it had opened an investigation into West Yorkshire Police's handling of the incident.

Officers found the man with critical injuries and he passed away on Monday, with a post-mortem examination due to take place.

"A non-police firearm" was found at the scene, the IOPC said, with initial evidence suggesting it "had been discharged".

The watchdog said police deployed CS gas and a distraction device letting off "loud bangs" during entry to the home.

IOPC regional director Emily Barry said: "Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends and all those affected by the tragic incident on Sunday.

"We appreciate that the community will want answers quickly and our investigators are working hard to establish the facts and piece together the sequence of events on the night."
