Five disused 19th Century properties on Alderney are set to be demolished.

The terraced buildings at Whitegates formed part of the States of Alderney's social housing portfolio which was transferred to the Alderney Housing Association in 2010.

The General Services Committee said at its meeting earlier in May in the "interest of public safety" the properties should be demolished "as soon as practicable".

States Works will put the schedule of works out to tender.

A 2008 survey of the properties found they were in an "extremely poor condition".

It highlighted issues with the building's condition, including vulnerability to damp and timber decay, structural movement requiring possible underpinning and the danger of their proximity to the main road.

The report concluded that refurbishment of the properties would be uneconomical and recommended demolition.

In 2021, a further survey revealed that the properties had fallen into further disrepair and the advice of the 2008 survey - that it would be uneconomical to undertake refurbishment - was reiterated.
