Fire at abandoned school deemed 'suspicious'

Crews tackled a fire at a derelict school in County Durham on Tuesday night

A fire at a derelict primary school is being treated as suspicious.

Emergency crews were called to the former Greenland Infant School in Stanley, County Durham, at about 22:20 BST on Tuesday.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) worked through the night to extinguish the blaze and left the area shortly before 08:00 on Wednesday.

No-one is thought to have been injured but the incident is being treated as suspicious, Durham Police said.

The former Greenland Primary School in South Terrace has been empty since 2013.

Four fire engines were at the scene along with a ladder platform, CDDFRS said.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Durham Police.
