Amber wildfire alert issued ahead of warm weather
- Published
An amber wildfire alert has been issued for this coming weekend.
It is the first amber alert of the year and it will cover the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) area.
The risk is greatest on large areas of open land, such as heath lands, fields and cliff sides.
A spokesperson from the service said: "Just a few simple steps can make a real difference to preventing fires from starting.”
'Take real care'
Group Manager, Stuart Gillion said: “With a period of warm weather underway, we would urge people to take real care when enjoying the sunshine in our beautiful countryside.
"If you’re visiting our heath lands, woodlands or countryside, please avoid having a campfire and take a picnic rather than use a disposable barbecue.
People having barbecues or bonfires at home are reminded to never leave them unattended, and site them well away from fences, trees or buildings.
Keeping a hose nearby is also advised, in case the fire gets out of control.
Barbecue coals should be doused with water and not disposed of in a wheelie bin until they are cold.
Landowners and land managers are also advised to be prepared for fires.
Cut grasses and vegetation should be removed from the site, to minimise the risk.
Anybody who sees a wildfire is urged to report it immediately to DWFRS.
