An investigation is under way after sewage was spilled from a pumping station onto farmland.

The incident happened at Moreton on the River Lugg in Herefordshire on Wednesday.

Water company Welsh Water said the spill had been stopped and it was trying to establish the cause.

A team was sent to investigate and the Environment Agency has been informed.

"The manhole is no longer overflowing [but] we do need to carry out some further investigations to understand the cause," a Welsh Water spokesperson said.

"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience that has been caused."

The Environment Agency added: “We are aware of this issue on the River Lugg and are liaising with Welsh Water to resolve the situation.

“If members of the public are concerned about environmental issues please call our 24/7 hotline on 0800 807 060.”
