A six-month-old puppy has been put down after being found in a severely poor condition on a construction site, prompting the RSPCA to seek information as to what happened.

The charity said the cockapoo was found on Marshall Street, Smethwick, and was skeletal, matted and had fly eggs around his belly and groin area.

Unable to use either of his hind legs and suffering from incontinence, he was put down due to the severity of his condition.

The RSPCA is appealing for information about how the puppy deteriorated into such a "desperate" state and was left at the location.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Charlotte Holder said: “This poor dog was found in a great deal of pain.

"It’s the responsibility of us all to show kindness and compassion to all animals."

The puppy was found on 25 July. Anyone with information is asked to contact the RSPCA.

Ms Holder added: “We haven’t been able to trace his owner so we are hoping someone may have some information about him and the circumstances which led to him being abandoned.”
