One of Nottinghamshire's most prestigious music festivals is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

The Southwell Music Festival takes place around the town from 23 to 26 August, starting with a newly-commissioned work to mark the occasion.

Organisers said audiences can immerse themselves in classical, chamber and choral concerts alongside performances from jazz and folk artists.

It also boasts pop-up shows, a musical picnic for families and the free Festival Fringe's return, which will raise money for local charity, Beaumond House Hospice.

The programme includes a performance of Mozart’s Requiem and a headline recital from acclaimed British tenor Mark Padmore in Southwell Minster.

It opens with the world premiere of a new piece for choir and orchestra called With What Sudden Joy, commissioned especially by the festival from composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad and poet Kate Wakeling.

It features the words of Southwell residents and school children who were asked to share their personal perspectives on the power of music.

On Saturday, free pop-up performances from the New Orleans-style brass ensemble Head Rush will take place on the streets of the town.

Amateur invitation

However, families are being warned the free Musical Picnic event in the palace gardens is already fully booked.

Amateur singers have been invited to join professional soloists for a performance of Mozart’s Coronation Mass, which will close the festival.

Artistic director Marcus Farnsworth said: “The festival team is ready to welcome audiences for this special musical celebration in our tenth anniversary year.

"Join us in Southwell for a weekend of thrilling music making in inspiring places."
