Repair work to a viewing platform at a National Trust site is due to be carried out after it was damaged during flooding.

The National Trust said the Devil's Cauldron trail platform at Lydford Gorge, near Tavistock, Devon, had taken a "battering" and it had been left covered in leaves and branches following heavy rain.

The trust said rangers were planning to remove and repair the sides and floor of the platform which stretches across a large pothole full of water and is surrounded by rock walls.

It said the repairs would help prevent any more damage from flooding and debris.

"The Devil's Cauldron platform has taken a battering recently," the trust said.

"The heavy rain caused the river to rise well above the platform and deposit a host of leaves and branches and even some logs."

The Devil's Cauldron trail closed to visitors on 3 November for safety and essential maintenance work.

The trust has asked people not to pass any locked gates and said the site would reopen from Saturday 14 March next year.
