There are road closures in Burnley town centre this weekend following a gas leak.

A smell of gas has been traced to a distribution pipe that runs underneath Royle Road, at the junction where it meets the roundabout at the A679 (Active Way), Cadent said.

The firm's engineers "have ensured everything is under control" but will look to fully repair it over the weekend.

Nick Jerman from Cadent said: “We have tried hard – working with the local authority – to minimise the disruption as best we can."

Expect delays

He said it was a "busy traffic area" and there was "really no quiet time to get this work done".

"Our teams have already taken action to keep everyone safe, and to keep gas flowing to the local area, but we do need to investigate this fully and carry out a repair," he added.

Cadent’s teams will dig a deep excavation, and then repair the pipe without having to cut the gas off.

There will be no access from Royle Road to the roundabout at Active Way and motorists should expect delays.
