Full weekend southbound closure for A1 repairs

Extensive repairs are needed to the culvert after a fatal lorry crash last year
- Published
Work to restore a section of the A1 near Peterborough which was damaged in a fatal crash last year is set to continue from Friday, National Highways has confirmed.
The southbound carriageway will be fully closed between Wansford and Alwalton, Cambridgeshire, from 21:00 GMT on Friday until 18:00 GMT on Sunday, although the schedule for the work near Water Newton could be affected by Storm Claudia.
One lane has remained closed since 1 November 2024, when a lorry left the road and crashed into a field.
The site is near the border with Northamptonshire.
The accident caused severe damage to a culvert believed to be more than a century old.
National Highways previously said the repair work was challenging due to the presence of a major water main near the road, as well as the nearby brook which feeds into a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Overnight preparation work began on 1 September, with full culvert repairs scheduled for 2026-27.
Drivers are being urged to avoid the area over the weekend. A diversion will be in place via the A47, the A1260 (Nene Parkway) and the A1130 (Fletton Parkway).
