A man was rescued after getting stuck knee-deep in mud on a beach near Cleethorpes.

In a social media post, Cleethorpes Coastguard said they were called to their first incident of the new year at Humberston Fitties at around 12:50 GMT on Wednesday.

Two "Mud Rescue Technicians" supported by the fire service helped extract the man who was stuck around 20ft (6m) from the shore.

The man had mild hyperthermia, but no other injuries, the coastguard added.

The emergency services are regularly called out the area to incidents of people and vehicles getting stuck

In its Facebook post, the coastguard said the rescue was hampered by the mud being wetter and "more fluid than normal", external.

"Every time the techs removed the mud from the casualty's legs, it ran straight back into the hole, severely hindering the extraction."

The area regularly sees people and vehicles having to be rescued after getting stuck in the mud.

The coastguard said that anybody who gets trapped should "remain calm, stay still, sit or lay down to distribute your weight" and call for help.

"Please do not encourage bystanders to execute a rescue," the coastguard added.

"They will become casualties."
