New Bishop of Truro installed in cathedral service

The Church of England's new leader in Cornwall has officially taken up his post at a church service on Saturday.

Bishop David Williams was installed during the service at Truro Cathedral, which saw him having to knock on the front doors from outside to be admitted into the building as part of the ceremony.

He has taken over from Hugh Nelson, who served as the Bishop of St Germans and Acting Diocesan Bishop after the departure of Philip Mounstephen in 2023.

Prior to his installation, which sees him now leading about 300 churches, he said wanted to use his first 100 days "to get everywhere, to be known and know each community and to "listen deeply" to the people of the "extraordinary county".

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "It seems to me a community of joy and a can-do attitude. I'm really warming to that.

"I'm amazed at how many people are prepared to be committed to the flourishing of a local church."
