Eric Morecambe events will 'bring sunshine to all'

Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the legendary comedian's birth

Plans to celebrate Eric Morecambe's life next year to mark what would have been the comedian's 100th birthday have been backed by councillors.
A motion asked Lancaster City Council to do as much as possible to support a range of events in May 2026.
It said the local authority should play "a leading role" in supporting and facilitating celebrations and "work with local organisations, community groups and businesses to plan and deliver public events, exhibitions and other commemorative activities".
"I know how proud we all are of his work and legacy," said Councillor Matthew Black, who put forward the motion. "Eric Morecambe belongs to everyone and this collaborative project will do too."
'A very funny man'
Born John Eric Bartholomew, Morecambe's stage name was inspired by the Lancashire seaside town.
The much-loved performer, who with Ernie Wise formed one of the nation's favourite double acts, died at the age of 58 after collapsing on stage with a heart attack on 28 May 1984.
His statue on Morecambe promenade was unveiled by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1999.
Black said his idea had already "created a lot of interest" in the Lancashire town, including from a television production company interested in filming a fly-on-the-wall documentary about the lead up to the 100th anniversary of Morecambe's birth.
Councillor Joanne Ainscough said 2026 was an opportunity to show the town's creativity and warmth.
She added: "My mum worked in The Ship pub in Torrisholme, where Eric Morecambe used to pop in.
"He was a funny man in very ordinary moments but also had humility and kindness.
"Having an Eric Morecambe celebration will show Morecambe at its best and bring sunshine to all."
