A road in Leicestershire will be shut for up to 11 days so that work can take place on a new housing development.

Carriageway improvement and drainage work for homes on part of the Melton hospital site in Thorpe Road began on Monday.

The main entrance to Melton Mowbray Hospital will be accessible at all times, health bosses have said.

Leicestershire County Council has asked Snowden Homes for it to be completed by 15 March, or to make sure it is safe to reopen in time for a cycling event.

The Junior CiCle Classic is due to take place on 17 March.

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust has said Thorpe Road is closed between the B676 Saxby Road/A607 Norman Way and Stafford Avenue.

The section of the road between Stafford Avenue and Melton Spinney Road remains open.

The county council said a one-way diversion route was in place.

The spokesperson added: "This is essential work being carried out by the developer and is linked to carriageway improvement and drainage work.

"Unfortunately, some disruption is unavoidable."
