The family of a "beloved father" who was killed when a car struck a tree have said he will be "forever missed".

Jonathan Mennell, 35, died at the scene in Newton-le-Willows at about 22:30 BST on Monday.

A white Ford Kuga had been travelling on Southworth Road, in the direction of Church Road, when it left the carriageway, Merseyside Police said.

A 35-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs, has been released on bail.

Witnesses sought

Mr Mennell's family said they were "deeply saddened and shocked" at the loss of their "lovely Jonny".

Their statement said: "Beloved Son, Father, Brother, Nephew, Cousin and Friend to all.

"Anyone that knew Jonny will be devastated by this news, as all he did was make people laugh and smile.

"He will be forever missed, may he now rest in peace."

Det Sgt Andy Roper urged witnesses from two specific vehicles to come forward.

One is a white Ford Puma, travelling on Newton Road near to the Travellers Rest pub, heading towards Newton-le-Willows, when it was passed by the Ford Kuga.

The second is a small white or silver car, travelling on Southworth Road away from Newton-le-Willows, when it passed the Ford Kuga travelling in the opposite direction close to the junction with Warren Drive.

DS Roper said both cars passed the Ford Kuga shortly before the crash.

Any other witnesses or anyone with any dashcam footage have also been urged to contact the force.
