A swimming pool has been closed after cracks were found in its pipework.

The discovery was made during routine maintenance of the filtration system at Much Wenlock swimming pool, Shropshire Council said.

It would have to be closed for "longer than was anticipated," and the issue had been uncovered at a "difficult time of year," the council added.

Other leisure activities at the centre were unaffected, it stressed.

Councillor Robert Macey apologised for the closure, but said that, as the pipework was brittle and could not be reconnected to the filtration system, the pool could not be used.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience this will cause, and it has come to light at a difficult time of year, but we will work as fast as we can after the holiday period to find a solution."

Clubs and classes that used the pool would be contacted, and all memberships would be frozen, he added.
