A town's main swimming pool is due to reopen after roof damage forced it close for 17 months.

Shrewsbury's Quarry pool shut in July 2022 after panelling came loose and had repairs and improvements costing £400,000, Shropshire Council said.

Shropshire Community Leisure Trust, which runs it for the authority, said it was excited for Wednesday's opening after a "long road" of work.

It is offering free swimming and children's taster lessons this weekend.

Staff said during what they were calling the "Big Reopening Weekend" swimmers would be able to use its diving boards and flume during the free sessions, which could be booked online.

The Quarry pool will reopen from 10:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Plans for a rebuild of the pool and a new one in the Sundorne area were put on hold last year to prioritise a plan for a £12.1m pool and leisure development in Whitchurch.
