Police are encouraging residents in east Devon to get involved with a community speed watch scheme.

Officers have asked for volunteers to join a speed watch group in Tytherleigh near Axminster after the success of similar road safety schemes in other nearby villages.

The scheme will see volunteers use speed detection devices and work with police to monitor vehicles, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

PC Ben Middleton said the work highlighted how "community minded people can make a difference".

Reduce speed

The aim of community speed watch is to educate drivers and encourage those exceeding limits to reduce their speed, the force added.

PC Middleton said: “Local residents... tell us that one of their main concerns is speeding motorists and we know that speed is a major factor in many road traffic collisions.

"Volunteers in other community speed watch groups do a fantastic job and highlight how community minded people can make a difference.

“If you have some spare time to help out each month and want to raise public awareness of speeding in your area please get in touch and we will explain how you can assist us.”

New volunteers in Tytherleigh will receive training and support from the Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Police said the core aim of Community Speed Watch was to reduce death and injury on the roads and improve the quality of life for local communities.
