A new seafront toilet block has been damaged in an arson attack.

The recently-installed public toilets at Redcar's Beach Base were closed for some time on Friday and one stall will remain shut for two weeks, a council statement said.

The toilet cubicle was set on fire on Wednesday, and a water pipe was also damaged causing further problems.

Cleveland Police is investigating the incident.

The toilet block is at the heart of the Redcar Beach Base attraction, which is being developed alongside the town's Majuba Beach.

In recent months, a mini golf course and a children's playground have opened in the area, with a range of other facilities and events - including Redcar's first kite festival in May - planned for in and around the community and leisure hub.

A statement from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council said the authority was working with the police.

The news, posted on social media, was met with anger.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said inquiries were ongoing into the arson attack, which happened at about 17:50 BST on Wednesday.
