Motorists face almost one month of roadworks as the council upgrades its traffic lights.

A section of Lode Hill, in Downton, Wiltshire, will be closed on weekdays between 09:00 and 15:00 BST from 17 June to 12 July.

A virtual footway, with dropped kerbs, would be added along the route for the safety of pedestrians, a council spokesperson said.

Wiltshire Council leader, Richard Clewer, said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by these works, but it’s our priority to ensure that residents can travel around safely."

“Traffic lights play a vital role in managing traffic movement as well as ensuring pedestrians and cyclists can cross busy junctions safely and these improvement works reflect our commitment to road safety, as set out in our Business Plan," he added.

The road closure will be in place between the junction with Barford lane and Slab Lane.

On 4 July - when the general election is taking place - the road will re-open to enable people to vote. However, temporary traffic signals will be in operation to allow workers to remain at the site.
