Four teachers have applied for a vacant job in Herm at the Channel Islands' smallest school, according to the States of Guernsey.

Herm Primary School, which employs one teacher and currently just four pupils, has been searching for a replacement for Mary Cary, who resigned last month after 18 years in charge.

Even though the new teacher will be in charge of school day-to-day, they would not be a head teacher as the school operates under the umbrella of Vauvert School in nearby Guernsey.

The role does come with a management allowance of about £6,500 on top of a salary of between £37,500 and £60,500.

Mrs Carey taught 40 children during her 18 years in the role, but had been on a prolonged period of absence prior to announcing her resignation.

A trial closure of the small school was brought in at the start of this academic year because of high running costs, but was reopened in November following public pressure.

Herm, the smallest of the main Channel Islands at just 2 sq km, has no roads or cars and fewer than 70 permanent residents.
