Clean up after trespassers damage former hospital

Former Bridgwater community hospital was built in 1865

Contractors have been instructed to repair damage in a former Somerset hospital following recent trespass activity.

Located on Salmon Parade in Bridgwater, the old community hospital site has been vacant since 2014.

Following the unauthorised access, workers have been asked to remove the debris and to improve the safety of "loose materials".

As part of the government's Levelling Up Fund, the Grade II listed building will soon become a health and social care academy following a £19.7m transformation.

The council have said the new centre will help to boost staff numbers in its health and social care sector

Works will continue to improve the deterioration in the buildings before the removal of asbestos and other hazardous materials will begin.

Somerset Council has confirmed that it had not yet "altered or removed anything in the main or Listed Buildings".

"The project is still in the design work phase and necessary planning permissions still need to be obtained."
