Man dies after getting into difficulties off Cork coast

A man in his 50s has died following an incident at a beach in County Cork.

It happened at about 15:00 BST on Friday at Inch Strand in Whitegate, south of Cobh.

In a statement, Gardaí (Irish police) said a number of people had got into difficulty in the water.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported that the man had entered the water to help others, external.

The man was transferred to Cork University Hospital by ambulance where he later died.

Arrangements will now be made for a post-mortem examination and the local coroner has been notified.
