Tributes are being paid to a former chairman of East Sussex County Council (ESCC) following his death.
The authority announced the death of Peter Pragnell, who served as council chairman twice between 2018 and 2024 and led Hastings Borough Council (HBC) between 2006 and 2010.
The 65-year-old was formerly a coach driver and civil servant with the Department for Work and Pensions, before beginning his political career.
Liam Atkins, chair of Hastings and Rye Conservatives, said that Mr Pragnell would be "sorely missed in every circle" and described his death as a "tragic and sudden loss".
"He was respected across the political divide, and throughout almost his entire working life, he championed our values and served our community with unwavering commitment," Mr Atkins added.
"He was the kindest, most humble, and friendly chap to all who knew him and was loved by every single one of us. As his political family, we are struggling to come to terms with this sudden and tragic loss."
ESCC leader Keith Glazier echoed the sentiments, adding that the council had lost "a true friend and most loyal colleague".
Mr Pragnell, who died on Monday, moved to Hastings 40 years ago and was first elected as a borough councillor in 2000, serving on both St Helens and Conquest wards, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
He also travelled to Sierra Leone as part of a friendship link between the East Sussex coastal town and Hastings in Sierra Leone.
HBC leader Glenn Haffenden said: "He will be remembered as a dedicated former leader and long-serving councillor in Hastings, who cared deeply for the town and our residents."
