'I've painted mirrorballs for Katy Perry and Kylie'

A signwriter from Leeds has painted murals, shop fronts and film sets - but his latest commission will find its way into the hands of pop star Katy Perry to mark the end of her current tour.

Kieran Hadley, from design studio Third Eye Signs, was asked to paint a bespoke mirrorball to match the theme of her Lifetimes tour - in red, white and blue and with a "whole lot of glitter".

The artwork, bought as a gift for the singer by promoter AEG Presents, also features a butterfly-shaped Union flag to match her tour poster.

The request came just months after he created a similar piece to mark the end of Kylie Minogue's Tension tour - a request he admitted left him slightly starstruck.

"The Kylie one, it ticked a lot of boxes for the 13-year-old me who used to watch Kylie on neighbours and listen to The Locomotion," he said.

"It was surreal! I did that one, then I thought that would be it."

That was not it, however, as the promoter got back in touch to ask him to create another mirrorball for Katy Perry.

Whereas the Kylie mirrorball was created within a matter of days, this time Mr Hadley had more time to work on the design - and was also given the chance to take his three children to see the tour at Sheffield's Utilita Arena on 10 October.

Describing his design, he said: "It's a Union Jack, which obviously was part of the branding for the tour, but each of the colours is two different shades of glitter.

"There is red, white and blue glitter with red glitter letters and a blue outline.

"There are lots of little clever bevels and bits of airbrush and sparkly lacquer on there too," he added.

His style, which he describes as being based on traditional signpainting and mural techniques but with a clashy colour palette, has developed over the 10 years he has been in the business.

He started signwriting after a television documentary inspired him to give it a go, and before he knew it, "people wanted to pay me to do it", he said.

"I did a Masters while I was teaching at Leeds Arts University; the plan was to make teachers' resources, but I watched a sign painters' documentary and I thought 'I can do that!' and I just went down a rabbit hole, teaching myself to paint letters.

"I did it alongside teaching for a bit and then jumped ship," he said.

Mr Hadley, who lives in north Leeds, has featured as a guest artist on BBC's Interior Design Masters, and has had work featured on It's A Sin for Channel 4 and Netflix show Bodies. He has also painted the shop fronts at Leeds' Abbey House Museum.

Asked about his dream commission, the 46-year-old said a former vacuum cleaner shop near Headingley is on his list.

"Now it's derelict, I want to paint the whole building," he said.

"I want to do a gigantic mural, something preposterously big.

"I have done one 40m tall, I have done full gable ends on my own, I would love to do a whole building or a giant public space."

Katy Perry's The Lifetimes Tour is fifth concert tour by the American singer and is set to finish in Abu Dhabi on 7 December.
