A man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after threatening a woman with a large knife during a burglary at her home.
George Gale, 27, from Kington Langley, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and was sentenced at Swindon Crown Court on Monday.
The court heard that on the evening of 12 August 2024, Gale forced his way into the woman's home, knocking her to the floor.
Armed with a large knife, he demanded money and jewellery, threatening to kill her and her pets if she contacted the police.
'So frightened'
Judge Taylor described Gale as a "significant risk," particularly to elderly women, and stated that he saw his victim as "easy prey."
He added that Gale had taken advantage of the woman's affection for her dogs to further intimidate her.
In addition to his 14-year sentence, Gale was ordered to serve two-thirds of the term before being considered for parole.
He was also issued with an indefinite restraining order, which prevents him from contacting the victim or entering the area of Kington Langley.
Det Con Tom Carver, from Wiltshire Police, praised the victim for her bravery in coming forward.
"The victim was so frightened that she initially did not want to report the incident. It was only when a friend came forward that she disclosed what had happened," Carver said.
The victim, who feared a sexual assault during the incident, was left shaken by the ordeal.
Gale left with several pieces of jewellery, including four gold chains, which have never been recovered.
"Burglary is a crime that can have a lasting impact on victims, and we are pleased that justice has been served," added DC Carver.
"This conviction sends a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated."
