Guernsey Waste shares tips on reducing food waste
- Published
Guernsey Waste releases some top tips on how to save money and food this Christmas.
They estimate more than £15m worth of good food is thrown away by islanders every year, which they estimate costs the average family £900 a year.
The annual festive campaign wants to promote food waste reduction in Guernsey.
Guernsey Waste suggests buying less, portion planning, writing a shopping list, and sharing leftovers with guests and friends.
'Full potential'
Guernsey Waste deals with on average 62 tonnes of waste per week, but this goes up during the Christmas period.
Douglas Button, waste minimisation and sustainability officer, said: "Waste is generally increased during the Christmas period.
"So, it is a nice thing to bear in mind that what you are buying should be used to its full potential."
He continued: "If you do so, we can reduce the amount of waste we do produce over Christmas, which is generally more than the average over the year."
The free Love Food Hate Waste, external calendar provides recipes and money saving tips, and can be picked up from island supermarkets.
