A new campaign is helping people to keep active, combat isolation and stay warm throughout winter.

The NHS and councils in Bristol, Somerset and South Gloucestershire are providing people with guidance on how to manage their health ahead of a drop in temperature.

The campaign is led by local groups who have benefited from taking proactive steps to stay well, including a volunteer befriender, a benefits advisor, and community pharmacist.

Advice includes practical tips on heating your home, how to pick up a prescription, boosting your immunity and protecting your mental health.

Free 'winter warm packs' containing blankets, gloves and hand warmers will also be given out, alongside offering free classes to help keep people active and social.

Pete Walker, who joined the Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust's gardening club, said: "Trying to get a man to talk about his problems is quite difficult at times.

"Once you get to know people, you can feel more relaxed and open up a lot more.

"Fresh air and exercise helps my mental health as well," he added.

Maria Perrett says people must not let bad weather put them off from staying well

Maria Perrett, community activator for Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust, said: "In the winter especially, we need to keep moving.

"Not just for our physical health but our well-being. One of the ways we do that is to get outdoors.

"Sometimes the weather looks awful but when you get out and start moving it's about clocking up those steps, coming to meet other people, neighbours and friends, and doing something great for your community."

Dr Joanne Medhurst, chief medical officer at NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board (ICB), said it was important to take "proactive action" to protect yourself.

“By getting vaccinated against flu and COVID-19, keeping your home warm when temperatures drop, and making small tweaks to avoid slips and trips at home, you can put yourself in the best shape to stay well this winter," she said.
