Police are investigating a report of a racially aggravated attack in Exeter.

Devon and Cornwall Police said an investigation was continuing into an alleged assault of a man in his 20s near St David's railway station at about 01:30 BST on 26 August.

Syed Jusef, Liberal Democrat councillor for Barnstaple North, referred to the incident at Devon County Council on Thursday when he asked colleagues to reaffirm zero tolerance to hate crime.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police.

Speaking in the Devon County Council meeting, Jusef said there was "rising hostility to migrants and minority communities".

He added: "We cannot allow hate to take root in Devon."
