A man has been arrested after armed police swarmed a house near a town centre.

Police were called to the property in Stranding Street in Eastleigh, Hampshire, just before 14:40 BST on Tuesday, following concerns for the welfare of a man who was reported to have a gun.

The road was closed the road while officers worked resolve the incident.

A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife, blade or sharp pointed object in a public place, and possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, and remains in custody.

Hampshire Constabulary said the man they found at the property was the "only one in the house" at the time.

Ch Insp Matt Paling, district commander for Eastleigh, said officers would remain in the area.

"Seeing a large police response and our specialist teams in attendance will have understandably left people worried about what may be happening in their neighbourhood," he said.

"Our teams have responded quickly and professionally to resolve this contained incident as soon as possible, with no wider threat to the public."
