Hospice Christmas Day swim raises £2,500

About 200 people got in the water for the event

A Christmas Day swim in St Ouen has raised more than £2,500 for charity, organisers have confirmed.

The annual swim, which takes place at Greve de Lecq, raises funds for Jersey Hospice Care.

About 200 people braved the cold water for the St Ouen Football & Sports Club event.

Organiser Karl Fitzpatrick said feedback for the event was positive and it was "well supported and really well liked".

Mr Fitzpatrick said the event started more than a decade ago in memory of one of the football club's former presidents.

He said: "One of our late presidents Mick Samson passed away in the hospice, and his dying wish was to ask if we could give something back to the community, back to the hospice.

"He asked if the football lads on Christmas Day could start a little Christmas swim.

"It's a bit of a laugh, coming together and from there it's gone from strength to strength.

"We've now got 600 people attending, with 200 of them swimming on Christmas Day and it seems to be really well supported, really well liked."
