Plan for nearly 40 roads to become 20mph zones
- Published
Residents are being invited to have their say over a change in speed restrictions in Cambridge designed to cut pollution and make roads safer.
Cambridgeshire County Council has proposed extending 20mph limits to almost 40 more roads in the city as part of its Transforming Cities programme.
Earlier this year, speed reduction measures were introduced in some other parts of Cambridgeshire, including Ely and Huntingdon.
The council said it hoped safer streets with lower speed limits would make residents more confident to walk, cycle and use other non-motorised transport.
A survey on the Consult Cambridgeshire website is open for comments on the proposal until 25 September.
Alex Beckett, chair of the highways and transport committee, said cutting speed limits from 30mph to 20mph could reduce the chance of severe or fatal injuries from collisions by 60% and cut pollution by 30%.
He said: "Nearly 20 years ago, Cambridge introduced its first 20mph zones. They've been widely seen as successful and now we're asking residents if they want to expand the number of 20mph streets within the city.
"I encourage everyone to respond so that we can listen to the feedback, which will help shape our future proposals to make roads and footways safer for all users."
Mr Beckett said the council wanted to know what residents and businesses thought of the proposals, if the right streets were included and if the boundaries were in the best places.
There are more than 30 roads included in the plans.
