In pictures: A night to remember at town carnival

Weston-super-Mare Carnival returned on Friday night
- Published
Thousands of people headed out to see the streets of a seaside town light up for an annual carnival.
A procession of illuminated carts and costumed performers filled the streets of Weston-super-Mare for the return of the carnival on Friday night.
The event, which dates back to 1871, is one of the well-known Somerset Guy Fawkes carnivals. The Bridgwater and Highbridge and Burnham-on-Sea carnivals have already taken place.
Dick Berry, the chair of Weston-super-Mare Carnival, said it was "a night to remember".

Each cart had a different theme, including the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead

The performers entertained the crowds

The spectacle lit up the dark, rainy streets

Judges were in the audience to pick their favourite carts and costumes from the night

The carnival chair said he "admired" the effort from all participants

A performer dressed as Elphaba from Wicked made her way through the town atop a broomstick

The procession followed a different route this year

Even Santa Claus came out for the occasion
