Children are being invited to bring their storytelling imagination to a new letter-writing competition.

Jersey Post's Once Upon a Letter contest is asking youngsters to tell a story in 500 words or fewer.

Local author Penny Byrne, who is on the judging panel, said the competition would be "huge fun for those entering - children can just let their imaginations run wild".

The postal service said children need a parent or guardian's permission to enter, with the competition closing at 17:00 GMT on 31 October.

Byrne said creative writing was "a fabulous tool for lifelong learning".

She said it helped children "build their confidence in communication and expression, improve their critical thinking, as well as enhancing empathy and problem-solving skills"

The competition is open to children between five and 11, with winners of three age categories winning a writing bundle.

All entrants would also receive stamps as a thank you for entering the competition, Jersey Post said.
