A temporary library is to be opened in Grimsby's Freshney Place while repair work continues on the town's central library.

It will be in Baxtergate, next to the Community Diagnostic Centre, and is due to open shortly.

Grimsby Central Library closed to the public on 28 March after concerns a water leak could have disturbed asbestos in the building.

Further surveys of the building are now under way to determine the works required.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, North East Lincolnshire councillors discussed the results of a public consultation on the future of the area's libraries.

More than 1,400 people responded to the survey.

There was public opposition to any possible move of Cleethorpes Library into Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, changing Waltham Library to volunteer-run status and any permanent move of Grimsby Central Library.

Councillors agreed to keep Cleethorpes Library where it is and continue to run the Waltham Library.

They also voted to reopen Grimsby Central Library, subject to a third consultation on repair costs.

A committee will also be set to look at the future of the libraries service.
