Zebra crossings are in wrong place say residents

Driver Samir Own says the zebra crossings are too near to the roundabout

Residents say a "dangerous" pair of zebra crossings are too close to a junction after a collision between a car and a pedestrian.
North Lincolnshire Council installed the crossings near the Ashby Road / Rowland Road roundabout in Scunthorpe last year.
Police said a pedestrian was taken to hospital for injuries not thought to be serious after a collision at the crossing on Ashby Road at about 17:00 on Monday 10 November.
Council leader Rob Waltham said the crossing had been installed after detailed studies of traffic flow and, while motorists might need time to adjust to the new layout, if they were having to brake sharply they were "driving too fast for the conditions".

John Andrews says the crossing on Ashby Road is "a little bit scary" and "a little bit dangerous"
The crossings on Ashby Road and Rowland Road include a cycle path which connects the town centre to Central Park.
Driver Samir Own, 33, said another driver had hit the back of his car when he had stopped at one of the zebra crossings.
"They [the crossings] need putting further down," he said, "especially the one on Rowland Road.
"It's too near to the roundabout."
He said when drivers used the roundabout they "always look right".
"If the car in front of you stops, you're gonna go straight into the back of them," Mr Own said.

John Andrews says some drivers travel too quickly in the area
Pedestrian John Andrews, 59, acknowledged there was a need for a crossing in the area, but said the crossing on Ashby Road was "a little bit scary" and "a little bit dangerous".
"Sometimes I've been standing and cars have come either around the bend or across the roundabout quite fast," he said.
"If a car's accelerating out of that bend, then that would be quite challenging."

Gary Spacey says the crossings are useful because the road is busy
Gary Spacey, 71, who lives nearby, said having crossings in the area was "good" because "it's a busy road".
He said, with two schools nearby, "people need to cross" and the crossings were also of benefit to older people.
However, he said: "The first time I saw it, it was far too close to the roundabout."
He said the crossings were a problem during busy periods because workers were in a rush to get home, the lighting at the crossings was not good and pedestrians were wearing dark clothing.

The crossings include dedicated lanes for pedestrians and cyclists
Mr Spacey said the crossings should have been located further away from the junctions.
Waltham said: "The new crossing was introduced so residents could safely and more easily cross one of the busiest junctions in Scunthorpe.
"We understand drivers may need some time to adjust to the new layout, but if you have to brake sharply, you're simply driving too fast for the conditions.
"The layout and signage are clear - all road users need to approach with care, observe the speed limit, and give way to pedestrians as required."
