Cheaper parking in town beset by roadworks

Steve Hamilton believes cheaper parking will make it easier for Christmas shoppers to choose the town

Cut-price parking is to be introduced in the run up to Christmas in a town which has been affected by roadworks for 11 months.
A flat rate of £1 to park any time in Farnham after 13:00 GMT from Monday to Thursday is being introduced.
The scheme comes into effect on 9 December and will run until 1 January 2026, with Surrey County Council, Waverley Borough Council and Farnham Town Council sharing the £40,000 cost.
Businesses say they have been affected by the town improvement works, which began in February.
The works will see wider pavements, more pedestrian controlled crossings and changes to the gyratory, with two-way traffic introduced in parts of Downing Street and The Borough.
In September one business owner reported a drop of 25% in customer numbers.

Farnham town centre has been the site of major roadworks since February
Steve Hamilton, who runs a tea room in Downing Street, said: "Sometimes we have customers who are rushing if their parking is running out, so the fact they can come in and not need to worry means they've got more time to sit, relax and enjoy everything that Farnham has to offer this Christmas.
"All of the shops are making an extra special effort, they've tried to make it as festive as possible."

Parking in Farnham will cost £1 until Christmas on Monday to Thursday afternoons
Waverley's portfolio holder for enforcement and regulatory services, Tony Fairclough, said: "Christmas is a vital time for our high streets.
"This offer shows that Farnham is open for business and ready to welcome visitors."
Tim Oliver, leader of Surrey County Council, said: "Our priority is to support Farnham through a challenging period.
"This package will make it easier for people to visit the town, support local businesses and keep the high street thriving.
"We will keep working with partners to minimise disruption from the roadworks."
