The victim was treated by ambulance staff in Station Road, Marston Green, near Solihull, on Tuesday evening, but died at the scene.
A 17-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion of murder and he remained in custody, West Midlands Police said.
"We will have extra officers in the area over the coming days and I would encourage anyone with any information, or concerns, to get in touch," Supt Wayne Carter said. Station Road remained closed on Wednesday.
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward with any information and said officers would be in the area conducting inquiries throughout the day.
