Second fire within days at derelict island hotel
- Published
A fire has broken out at a derelict hotel at an Isle of Wight resort for the second time in a week.
Crews from five stations on the island were called to the fire at the Cygnet Hotel, in Sandown, at 22:30 BST on Wednesday.
Firefighters have been working overnight to put the fire out with people living nearby urged to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke.
A fire on 5 June at the property is thought to have been started deliberately, the fire service said.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue said the cause of the current blaze is currently unknown.
There have been numerous fires at derelict hotels at the seaside resort.
In July 2022, and more recently in February, fires broke out at the former Parkbury Hotel.
In May 2021 a blaze destroyed part of Sandown's derelict Ocean Hotel, while there was a fire at the former Grand Hotel in January 2022.
The Royal Cliff Hotel was also destroyed in a suspected arson attack in 2014.
