Drivers caught filming the aftermath of a crash on the M6 will be "dealt with" after their "incredibly dangerous and illegal" actions, police have said.

Five people, including a six-year-old girl, were seriously injured in the crash on the southbound section of the motorway near Lancaster on Monday.

Lancashire Police said they spotted about six drivers on the northbound side of the motorway filming as they drove past after the incident.

This included one person who was driving a minibus full of children, the force added.

"Those caught by our officers or by cameras doing this yesterday, will be reported and dealt with appropriately," a spokesman said.

He said: "Slowing down to look at a collision, using your phones at the wheel, and driving without due care and attention is dangerous.

"It can cause further accidents and diverts the attention of the emergency services at the scene, whose priority needs to be helping those injured in the collision and investigating."

Nine people in total were hurt in the crash though none are thought to have life-threatening injuries.

The incident caused major disruption and delays to the surrounding road network while the motorway was shut for a number of hours.
