Construction giant Balfour Beatty will be prosecuted for alleged health and safety offences after a worker died from injuries sustained at the Atomic Weapons Establishment's (AWE) Aldermaston site.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) said the 58-year-old man, from East London, died after an incident in Berkshire on 6 July 2023.

The ONR, the country's nuclear regulator, said the incident was a conventional health and safety matter and there was no radiological risk to the public.

In a statement, Balfour Beatty said: "We acknowledge the findings of the Office for Nuclear Regulation investigation... and it is with great sadness that we look back on the tragic events of July 2023."

The company said its heartfelt thoughts remained with its colleague's family, friends and co-workers.

"The health and safety of our workforce will always be our primary concern. As legal proceedings have now commenced, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time," it added.
