A man has been charged with murder after the death of an 80-year-old man in West Sussex.

Anthony Scarrott was found with serious injuries at an address in Westcourt Road, Worthing, at about 20:20 BST on 11 September. He died in hospital three days later, police said.

Arno Engels, 39, of no fixed address, was originally arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed, before being rearrested on suspicion of murder.

After a brief hearing at Crawley Magistrates Court, Mr Engels was remanded in custory to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Friday.

Det Insp Amanda Zinyama, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "This is tragic incident, and our thoughts are with Anthony's family and friends."

She added that the victim and suspect were known to each other and the force was not looking for anyone else.

Det Insp Zinyama appealed for anyone who may have seen or helped Mr Scarrott in Westcourt Road between 19:20 and 19:40 on the evening he was injured to come forward.

The force said a police presence would remain in the area as investigations continued.
