Cannabis plants worth an estimated £1m have been found hidden in the basement and attic of a house in Rotherham.

Officers seized more than 1,000 plants from the property on Deepdale Road, including hundreds of seedlings which they believe were likely to be moved to different locations to be grown to maturity.

The plants were being powered by bypassed electrical mains, which officer said posed a serious fire risk for neighbouring homes.

South Yorkshire Police said a 31-year-old man was also arrested at another house on the road on suspicion of immigration offences during the same operation.

Police said the cannabis seizure and arrest came after officers "built up an intelligence picture around the properties on Deepdale Road".

The activity forms part of the force's Operation Grow, which is aimed at targeting and disrupting those involved in growing and supplying cannabis.

Insp John Crapper, of Rotherham Central neighbourhood police team, said: "It funds organised crime and results in the exploitation of vulnerable people.

"It is vital that people are aware of the connection between drugs and violent crime."
